Abstract Objective To analyze the concept of therapeutic touch in nursing care, specifying its attributes, antecedents, and consequents. Methods This is a conceptual analysis of the evolutive view of Rodgers (2000), about the concept of therapeutic touch in nursing care, together with an integrative literature review based on the research question: What is the concept of therapeutic touch in nursing care? What are the attributes, antecedents, and consequents of therapeutic touch in nursing care? The search was conducted in the electronic databases CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE Complete, Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts, MedicLatina, in the b-on Online Knowledge Library, by combining the descriptors DeCS/MESH "therapeutic touch", "nursing" e "nursing care" and the Boolean operator AND over the period from 2000 to 2020. Results The sample was composed of eight studies that identified three thematic pillars: (i) attributes: complementary and effective method, technique, tool, nursing intervention, use of hands, intention to help or heal, complementary treatment, intentional touch, and energy transfer; (ii) antecedents: pain, anxiety, fatigue, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, tension headache, fibromyalgia syndrome, and cardiovascular problems; (iii) consequents: promotes a calming effect; increases empathy, satisfaction, interaction, respect, sense of worth and life; promotes well-being, comfort, tranquility and peace, hope, security, motivation, mood and sleep quality; reduces stress and disruptive behaviors; promotes better functional status and quality of life. Conclusion Therapeutic touch is implicit in the professional practice of nurses, requiring concrete and unique adjustment to the real circumstances and needs of the person, towards a practice that promotes comfort.

Introduction: Reiki is a modality of Integrative and Complementary Practices (PICs), recognized and incorporated into the procedures table of the Unified Health System (SUS). Objectives: to evaluate the effects of Reiki in the relief of symptoms of people with advanced cancer, by conducting a pilot study to verify the methodological procedures of the research. Methodology: This is a randomized pilot study, with 14 participants, randomly divided into 2 groups - Control and Reiki - with 7 participants in each, selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria previously established. For data collection, an anamnesis was performed, blood pressure was measured, heart rate, saliva was collected to check the cortisol level; the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD), Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scales; Reiki was applied for 21 minutes each day for participants in the Reiki group. The scales were reapplied 30 minutes after the end of Reiki, as well as the collection of salivary cortisol was repeated. Results: The Mann-Whitney U test showed a statistically significant difference (p <0.007) for the sleep variable when comparing the groups, showing an improvement for the Reiki group when compared to the Control group. The methodology applied in this pilot study proved to be pertinent and adequate and will allow to evaluate the effects of Reiki on the symptoms of people with advanced cancer. Conclusion: Although the sample was small, which is a limitation of this study, the results have already signaled that the application of Reiki improved the sleep of the participants when compared to the control group. The continuity of this study, with a larger number of participants, will allow the verification of the effects of Reiki in a more statistically significant way

RESUMO

Many infants in the NICU experience difficulties with oral feeding, which contribute to prolonged length of stay. Oral feeding is a complex task involving sensorimotor functioning of the face, mouth, and larynx, as well as coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. The care provided in the NICU starting at birth sets the stage for future oral feeding. The purpose of this article is to describe strategies that will establish a positive foundation to support optimal oral feeding. Nurses can use these strategies to protect newborns from noxious stimuli and promote positive auditory, tactile, gustatory, and olfactory experiences to optimize neurodevelopment for the complex task of feeding.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intentional Touch (InTouch) refers to a soft physical touch with the aim to ease complaints and enhance well-being. Central questions were perception of InTouch by nurses and patients and possible effects on pain perception. PATIENTS AND METHODS: InTouch was developed by stakeholder involvement. Nurses working in geriatric care received expert training in InTouch. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation (including video recording) were conducted with nurses applying and patients with chronic pain receiving InTouch after the beginning of the intervention and after 4 weeks. Interviews were analyzed based on Qualitative Content Analysis and video recordings based on Qualitative Visual Analysis. RESULTS: Six elderly patients with chronic pain and 6 nurses were included. Nurses and patients equally described relaxation, well-being, and a sensation of warmth during the intervention. Patients reported no pain during the intervention. After the intervention, 3 patients each experienced pain relief or no change. Patients described better drive and positive feelings, and nurses felt empowered in their nursing work. Empathetic attention had special importance for improving the therapeutic relationship. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that InTouch promoted relaxation, well-being, and pain relief for elderly people suffering from chronic pain and may contribute positively to the therapeutic relationship.

Acute care nursing is currently undergoing unprecedented change, with health systems becoming more open to nonpharmacological approaches to patient care. Healing Touch (HT) may be a valuable intervention for acute care patients. Research has shown that HT helps both the patient and the caregiver; however, no study to date has examined the impact that the education of nurses in and their use of HT have on daily care delivery in the acute care setting. The purpose of the current qualitative study was to examine the use of HT by registered nurses in the acute care setting during their delivery of patient care, as well as the impact of education in and use of HT on the nurses themselves. Five themes were identified: (1) use of HT techniques, processes, and sequence; (2) outcomes related to HT; (3) integration of HT into acute care nursing practice; (4) perceptions of HT, from skepticism to openness; and (5) transformation through HT. Education in HT and delivery of this modality by nurses in the acute care setting provide nurses with a transformative tool to improve patient outcomes.

RESUMO

An innovative practice, therapeutic touch has been used for around ten years in the treatment of eating disorders. Delivered by nurse clinicians having received specific training, this approach is based on nursing diagnoses which identify the major symptoms of this pathology. The support is built around the body and its perceptions. Through the helping relationship, it mobilises the patient's resources to favour a relationship of trust, a letting-go, physical, psychological and emotional relaxation, and improves the therapeutic alliance.

Pain is one of the most feared symptoms of cancer. Bad pain not properly relieved contributes to the suffering of the patient and family. This may encourage them to seek additional complementary and alternative therapies, such as the one in our literature review. Reiki is understood as a healing method that uses universal energy to achieve balance and harmony of body, mind and soul, through the laying on of hands. Reiki is a relatively new therapy in relation to the relief of the symptoms of cancer. In fact, there are still a few articles in this field. Currently, the authors explore the evidence on the effectiveness of Reiki in relation to cancer pain and symptom control. Due to the increased interest deposited in Reiki by the health professionals -especially for oncology professionals- to relieve the symptoms of cancer, there has been a synthesis of recent studies to provide the evidence so far. After our literature review, we can conclude that there is insufficient evidence on the effectiveness of Reiki in relieving the cancer’s symptoms due to the small sample size used, the paucity of studies and the abandonment of the study participants and others (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the immediate postoperative period, managing postsurgical pain with pain medication can contribute to complications. A more effective approach might include a combination of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic measures, such as Reiki therapy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was to determine the impact of Reiki therapy on the pain perception of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) following Reiki sessions, satisfaction with Reiki therapy, satisfaction with the hospital experience overall, and pain medication use following surgery. WHAT IS REIKI?: Reiki is a technique for relaxation and stress reduction that also promotes healing. LITERATURE REVIEW: Reiki has been studied in women undergoing abdominal hysterectomies and in patients with cancer who were receiving chemotherapy. A review of 66 biofield therapy studies, including Reiki, suggested, "strong evidence for the effects of biofield therapy in the reduction of pain intensity in pain populations and moderate evidence for decreased pain in hospitalized patients." THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK: Martha Rogers's Theory of Unitary Human Beings formed the framework for this study. METHODS: The sample included 43 patients undergoing TKA, who were randomized into Reiki (N = 23) and non-Reiki (N = 20) groups. All subjects in this pilot study had unilateral TKA at the same hospital. Pain was assessed before and after Reiki therapy using the numeric rating scale in the preoperative area, postanesthesia care unit (PACU), and on each of 3 postoperative days. A questionnaire was distributed the day of discharge to measure satisfaction with Reiki and the hospital experience. RESULTS: All Reiki therapy sessions resulted in statistically significant reductions in pain, except those sessions in the PACU. Subjects receiving Reiki responded positively to questionnaires completed on the day of discharge. No statistically significant differences were found in pain medication use. DISCUSSION: Reiki may be an effective component in the management of surgical patients' postoperative pain. LIMITATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Subject numbers were limited due to the difficulty of meeting with the patients and obtaining informed consent. Due to the nature of Reiki therapy, the study was not blinded. Music played during Reiki therapy could have contributed to the effect experienced by the patients. Not all questionnaires were collected before patient discharge. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES: Future studies should include more subjects, control for music use during the Reiki session, and measure the length of time pain is decreased following Reiki treatments. UNANTICIPATED OUTCOMES: As a result of positive feedback and decreased pain ratings following Reiki sessions, a Reiki program has been established at the hospital. Ten nurses became trained and certified in Reiki.

RESUMO

Given the current transformation of traditional health care to provide more integrative and complementary modalities, health systems are implementing new programs and services to meet consumer and provider needs. One such integrative modality, Healing Touch, with a foundation in holistic nursing, is a gentle therapy that uses touch to promote health and well-being by balancing the human energy system. This article describes the perceptions of registered nurses regarding the implementation of a Healing Touch training program at a multihospital health system. Five themes were identified: benefit to the patient, benefit to the nurse, holism beyond task orientation, integrating Healing Touch into acute care, and barriers and challenges. Nurses recognize the importance of creating caring-healing relationships and a holistic approach to care. Training in Healing Touch provides one avenue for nurses and health care providers to provide compassionate care.

RESUMO

This prospective pilot study was implemented to determine whether a Healing Touch (HT) treatment postoperatively would have an effect on pain, anxiety, blood pressure, and pulse rate in adult postoperative outpatients. Using a randomized control trial design, participants were assigned to a control or intervention group. The control group received traditional nursing care (TNC), and the intervention group received a HT treatment in addition to TNC. Pre- and postdata collection included measurement of pain, anxiety, blood pressure, and pulse. HT treatment was at least as effective as TNC for reduction in pain and more effective in reducing anxiety. Posttreatment anxiety ratings in the intervention group had a significant decrease (0.55; p = .029), while the reduction in anxiety in the control group was not significant (0.25; p = .22). Neither group showed any difference pre- versus posttreatment in blood pressure or pulse. The intervention group had a decrease in pain rating of 1.0 (p < .001), and the control group had a decrease of 0.64 (p = .02). There was a trend toward a decrease in the use of narcotics with HT. HT is an appropriate modality to decrease anxiety, may be appropriate for pain reduction, and may decrease the amount of narcotics needed postoperatively. Patient comments reflected the relaxing effects of receiving HT. The findings support the use of HT as an effective complementary intervention for surgical outpatients, however additional research is recommended.

Most participants (82.6%) were female, more than half (60.5%) were Catholic and 79.1% were aged 20-60 years. There were 82.6% with anxiety of participants who described physical, emotional and mental symptomatology. Intervention with Reiki as nursing care, along with the teaching of breathing technique, promoted: increased state of cardiac coherence, whose average increased from nine to 31, that is, the heart rate came in synchrony and resonance with the breathing rhythm, with self-regulation of SNA, with increased variability interval of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), providing greater relaxation and, therefore, less stressful breathing and physiological and lower average heart rate, which went from 77bpm to 73bpm; there was satisfaction, well-being, relaxation and reducing stress levels; influence on the functional health and neurocognitive states, stimulus to spirituality, as well as improved self-control and social relationships, from which one can conclude that Reiki is a simple therapy, but complete for increased quality of life. The results demonstrate the importance of integrating Integrative and Complementary Practices in the Family Health Strategy in Brazil.(AU)

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Reiki on pain, anxiety, and hemodynamic parameters on postoperative days 1 and 2 in patients who had undergone cesarean delivery. The design of this study was a randomized, controlled clinical trial. The study took place between February and July 2011 in the Obstetrical Unit at Odemis Public Hospital in Izmir, Turkey. Ninety patients equalized by age and number of births were randomly assigned to either a Reiki group or a control group (a rest without treatment). Treatment applied to both groups in the first 24 and 48 hours after delivery for a total of 30 minutes to 10 identified regions of the body for 3 minutes each. Reiki was applied for 2 days once a day (in the first 24 and 48 hours) within 4-8 hours of the administration of standard analgesic, which was administered intravenously by a nurse. A visual analog scale and the State Anxiety Inventory were used to measure pain and anxiety. Hemodynamic parameters, including blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), pulse and breathing rates, and analgesic requirements also were recorded. Statistically significant differences in pain intensity (p = .000), anxiety value (p = .000), and breathing rate (p = .000) measured over time were found between the two groups. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the time (p = .000) and number (p = .000) of analgesics needed after Reiki application and a rest without treatment. Results showed that Reiki application reduced the intensity of pain, the value of anxiety, and the breathing rate, as well as the need for and number of analgesics. However, it did not affect blood pressure or pulse rate. Reiki application as a nursing intervention is recommended as a pain and anxiety-relieving method in women after cesarean delivery.
